90-Year-Old Veteran Takes an Unforgettable Flight

90-year-old Korean War veteran Richard "Dick" Swem achieved a bucket list dream as he took to the skies over Southwest Michigan on Aug. 13. Aboard a Piper aircraft at the bet365中文大学 Airpark, Swem, a longtime funeral director at Starks Family Funeral 首页s and respected community member, relived his passion for flying.

The event was coordinated by Dana Wales, a member of the bet365中文大学 Board of Trustees and a friend of Swem's. "When I heard about Dick’s wish, I knew the folks at bet365中文大学 would step up to make it happen,威尔士说。. "It’s a beautiful example of what we can achieve when we work together."

Swem's connection to aviation dates back to his youth. "I took flight lessons about 70 years ago, and I’ve always wanted to take the controls again,斯威姆说。. Reflecting on the experience of being back in the cockpit, Swem shared enthusiastically, "Today is a day I’ll never forget. It’s wonderful to feel the plane beneath my hands again."

Blied praised Swem's skills, 说, "He’s still got it. It’s an honor and a humbling experience to fly with someone from the greatest generation. Dick handled the plane like a pro."

The flight was also a family experience. Swem’s grandson, Patrick, joined him in the sky. Patrick reminisced about their shared memories, stating, "Grandpa took me flying when I was just 10. It’s one of those experiences you never forget. Being here today, seeing him so happy, it’s priceless." He added, "Seeing everyone come together to make this happen for him, it’s incredibly moving.”

The morning was not only about fulfilling a personal dream but also a testament to the community honoring a veteran that served the country. The Berrien Springs Oronoko Fire Department marked the occasion with a water cannon salute as Swem landed the plane, a surprise arranged by the Berrien Springs Oronoko Township Fire Department.

Police Chief Paul Toliver expressed the community's sentiments, stating, "It’s awesome. We don’t do enough for those who served our country. This salute is just a small way of showing our appreciation to Mr. 为他服务."

The flight was a heartfelt tribute to a man whose life has been marked by service, 家庭与社区. As Swem reflected on the day’s events, he summed it up simply: "It’s been an honor."

Swem concluded with his appreciation toward the University, 说, “Andrews has a long history of education and its close work within our community. Andrews is a wonderful place here in Southwest Michigan.”
